Flu and common cold are preventable even without drugs or herbs. Natural methods from traditional Chinese medicine including acupressure and acupuncture can be used for the prevention and treatment of influenza and common cold. These prevention methods, including folk remedies, have been proven quite effective in history and are still used today.
For healing colds and flu, non-drug methods and time-tested acupuncture point prescriptions are collected here. These natural healing methods include acupressure, acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping therapy, and auricular (ear) acupuncture. Locations of these acupuncture points are provided to facilitate clinical practice. Differential diagnosis types of colds and flu are described for personalized treatment. Therapeutic principles and needle manipulation methods are recommended for each type.
In addition, acupuncture point prescriptions from some ancient traditional Chinese medicine classics are collected, such as The AB Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (“Zhen Jiu Jia Yi Jing†in Chinese). These classics provide the guidance of selecting the most effective acupuncture points from hundreds of years of experience.
Flu and common cold may occur throughout the year, but are mostly seen in winter and spring. Common cold and flu may have symptoms such as nasal congestion and discharge, cough, fever, sneezing, headache, chilliness, sore throat, general aching of the body, and melancholy. Non-drug natural methods such as acupressure and acupuncture methods can be used to prevent and relieve these symptoms, and promote the healing of the root of the diseases.

How to Use Cupping Therapy and Moxibustion for Natural Healing of Diseases
Movable Cupping (Zou Guan Fa):
Before the treatment, apply lubricant oil, such as vaseline, on the skin, then apply the cup to the skin with methods such as flash-cupping. Hold the cup with one hand and slide it around the affected area, and then get back to the affected area until the whole area becomes red or congested. This method is used for treatment of a large area, such as the back, the lower back, the buttocks, and the thigh.
Successive Flash Cupping (Shan Guan Fa):
In this method, apply the cup repeatedly and swiftly over the same place until the skin becomes red or congested.
Cupping with Acupuncture (Zhen Guan Fa):
Cupping can be used together with acupuncture. During the retention of a needle, apply a cup over the needled area. Withdraw the cup first, then the needle.
Blood-letting Puncture and Cupping (Ci Xue Ba Guan):
After disinfecting the local place, puncture it with a three-edged needle or tap with a plum-blossom needle for bloodletting, then apply cupping. It can enhance blood circulation, relieve swelling and pain through removing the blood stasis, and improve the therapeutic effects.

Common cold and flu may occur throughout the year, but are mostly seen in winter and spring. Common cold and flu may show symptoms such as nasal obstruction and discharge, cough, fever, sneezing, headache, chilliness, sore throat, general aching of the body, and melancholy. Acupressure and acupuncture methods can be used to help prevent and relieve symptoms of colds and flu, and promote the healing of the diseases.
According to traditional Chinese medicine, for the prevention of common cold and flu, an important thing is to avoid the invasion of exogenous pathogenic factors. For example, you need to put on appropriate clothes during a sudden change of weather with unexpected cold or warmth. It is also necessary to avoid contact with those who already have common cold or influenza.
In addition, avoid being drenched by rain, and avoid fatigue. These factors may weaken your defensive energy, and predispose you to diseases. Diet and life style are key factors. Eat balanced meals and exercise regularly to strengthen your defensive energy.
A Chinese folk remedy to prevent common cold and flu is through steaming vinegar for air cleaning during flu seasons. A detailed instruction is given here.
Acupressure and acupuncture are useful for the prevention of common cold and flu during flu seasons. For example, the acupuncture point (acupoint) Yingxiang (LI 20) can be used for acupressure. More selections of acupuncture points and instructions for acupressure and acupuncture are available here.
Chinese medicine classifies common cold and flu into three different types: wind-cold, wind-heat, and summer-heat-dampness. Usually wind-cold is the main factor in winter, wind-heat is the main factor in spring, summer-heat and dampness are the main factors in summer, and dampness is the main factor in the rainy season. In addition, a person’s physical constitution decides whether a person will get the disease or not, even with the existence of pathogenic factors.
The general therapeutic principles for the treatment of common cold and flu include eliminating wind, releasing stagnated lung-qi, and expelling exogenous pathogenic factors. Detailed information and instructions on how to use acupressure, acupuncture, auricular (ear) acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping therapy for the treatment of different types of common cold and flu are available through this link. Time-tested acupuncture point selections and prescriptions from ancient classics of traditional Chinese medicine, and effective treatments demonstrated by scientific studies are also provided here.
