How to Use Wax Gourds for Weight Loss and Healing Diabetes
In Chinese culture, wax gourds mean “winter melon (‘Dong Gua’).” They are also called “white melon (‘Bai Gua’),” “pillow melon (‘Zhen Gua’),” and “east melon (‘Dong Gua’).”
Wax gourds can improve urination, remove phlegm, clear heat, and eliminate toxins or toxic materials. They are commonly used for weight loss and healing diabetes in the diet therapies of Chinese medicine.
Wax gourds are also useful for relieving edema, diarrhea, dysentery, carbuncles, swelling, beriberi, difficult urination (stranguria), cough, asthma, hemorrhoids, and irritability and restlessness caused by summer heat. They are very good for providing protection against poisoning of fish. They can relieve symptoms caused by excessive drinking of alcohol.
According to the theories of Chinese medicine, wax gourds have sweet and bland tastes, with a cool property. They can act on the meridians or channels of the Lung, Large and Small Intestines, and Urinary Bladder.
To eat wax gourds, they can be cooked to make soups, or stewed with other vegetables to make dishes. Wax gourd juice can be extracted for drinking, and wax gourd tea is popular in China. Pieces of raw wax gourds can be applied to affected areas for relieving carbuncles and swelling.
Because wax gourds have the cool property, they should not be eaten raw. Those with deficiencies of the spleen, stomach, and kidney should not eat wax gourds. Wax gourds are not recommended for patients with prolonged diseases and diarrhea.
Wax gourds are the fruits of Benincasa hispida. They belong to the Cucurbitaceae family. They contain proteins, calcium, phosphorus, iron, carotene, thiamine, nicotinic acid, and other vitamins and minerals.
