The Herbal Recipe for the Treatment of Influenza and Tonsillitis: The Powder of Honeysuckle Flower and Forsythia (Yin Qiao San)

For the treatment of influenza, acute tonsillitis, scarlet fever, early stage of measles and other febrile diseases caused by exogenous wind and heat, the herbal recipe of The Powder of Honeysuckle Flower and Forsythia (“Yin Qiao San” in Chinese) is very useful. The recipe can also be used for healing encephalitis B, epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, parotitis, and a variety of infections of the upper respiratory tract.

This recipe can clear heat, eliminate toxins and toxic materials, and remove the exterior pathogenic factors. It can be applied for healing diseases caused by exogenous wind-heat usually shown as fever with no or little sweating, slight aversion to wind and cold, headaches, cough, thirst, sore throat, red tongue tip with thin coating, and superficial and rapid pulse.

This recipe was designed by a famous physician Jutong Wu in the Qing Dynasty. It was recorded in the ancient Chinese medicine classic written by Dr. Wu, The Treatise on Differentiation and Treatment of Epidemic Febrile Diseases (“Wen Bin Tiao Bian” in Chinese). The recipe is composed of 10 herbs.

Current studies have found that this recipe can induce sweating, reduce fever, stop pain, and relieve cough. It has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammation effects. However, those with diseases caused by exogenous wind and cold factors should not use it.
