The Herbal Recipe for Healing Carbuncles and Skin Diseases: The Fairy Formula for Life (Xianfang Huoming Yin)
In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), there is a very useful herbal recipe especially designed for the treatment of skin infections including carbuncles, furuncles, boils, mastitis (mastadenitis), and phlegmon. This recipe is called The Fairy Formula for Life (“Xian Fang Huo Ming Yin” in Chinese).
This recipe is very good for the initial stage of skin diseases such as swelling, boils, and carbuncles caused by excessive toxic heat and the stagnation of Qi and blood. It can clear heat, remove toxins and toxic materials, decrease swelling and nodules, relieve pain, and energize the blood.
The Fairy Formula for Life (Xianfang Huoming Yin) is usually used for skin infections with symptoms such as swelling, pain, and hot feelings in the affected area, fever and chills. Such diseases may show thin and white coating or slightly yellow coating on the tongue, with rapid and forceful pulse.
The source of this herbal recipe or formula is from an ancient Chinese medicine classical book The Revised Notes of Effective Prescriptions for Gynecological Diseases (“Jiao Zhu Fu Ren Liang Fang” in Chinese). The herbal recipe of The Fairy Formula for Life (Xianfang Huoming Yin) is composed of 13 herbs:
Dahurian Angelica Root (Baizhi) 3 g, Fritillary Bulb (Beimu) 3 g, Ledebouriella Root (Fangfeng) 3 g, Red Peony (Chishao) 3 g, Chinese Angelica Root (Shengdangguiwei) 3 g, Gleditsia Spine (Zaojiaoci) 3 g, Anteater Scales (Prepared Pangolin Scales, Chuanshanjia) 3 g, Trichosanthes Root (Tianhuafen) 3 g, Fresh Mastic (Resina Olibani, Ruxiang) 3 g, Myrrh (Moyao) 3 g, Lonicera Flower (Honeysuckle Flower, Jinyinhua) 9 g, Citrus Peel (Jupi) 9 g, Licorice (Gancao) 3 g.
To take the herbal recipe, cook the herbs with water to make a decoction. Current studies have found that this herbal recipe can help relieve inflammation, improve blood circulation, remove blood stagnations, and stop pain. It also has antibacterial effects.
Note that this formula is contraindicated in patients with the Yin-type of boils or ulcers. Those patients with deficiencies of the Spleen, Stomach, qi, and the blood should use this recipe with caution.
