According to traditional Chinese medicine, diseases such as mastitis, breast cancer (carcinoma), bubo, scrofula, subcutaneous nodules, lymphadenitis, and multiple abscesses can be caused by the stagnation of phlegm-fire or toxic heat accumulation. These diseases can be treated with a useful herbal recipe, Calculus Bovis Pills (“Xi Huang Wan” in Chinese). This recipe is very good for relieving inflammation and removing blood stasis. It can be used for angiitis (vasculitis) and tumors.

The herbal recipe Calculus Bovis Pills (Xihuang Wan) can help remove toxic materials, reduce swelling, and alleviate pain. It is used to reduce phlegm and nodules, improve the blood circulation, and remove stagnation. It can be applied for diseases caused by stagnation of phlegm-fire, characterized by red tongue with rapid and rolling pulse.

This herbal recipe was originally from an ancient Chinese medicine book The Life-Saving Collection of Diagnosis and Treatments of External Diseases (“Wai Ke Quan Sheng Ji” in Chinese). The formula has five ingredients:

Calculus Bovis (Cow-Bezoare, Niuhuang) 1 g, Musk (Moschus, Shexiang) 4.5 g, Mastic (Olibanum, Ruxiang) 30 g, Myrrh (Moyao) 30 g, Yellow Rice (Huangmifan) 30 g.

To take the recipe, grind the first four ingredients separately into fine powder. Then grind steamed yellow rice into powder, and mix the rice powder with the powder from other ingredients. Add water to the mixed powder to make pills. Let the pills dry in a shady place. Take three to six grams of the pills with warm water or yellow rice wine each time.

Note that this recipe cannot replenish Qi or the blood, so those with deficiencies of Qi and the blood should not use it for a long time. This recipe should not be taken by patients with Yin-deficiency. Pregnant women should not use it.
